Antigona, women and rights from a gender perspective is a research group of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), within the Faculty of Law. The UAB is one of the most important public universities in Spain, recognized as a Campus of International Excellence and ranked within the best 200 best universities in the world.

The research group Antigona, was established in 2000 within the Department of Political Science and Public Law at the UAB. It emerged with the idea of becoming a center of research and legal information, resources and initiatives about women and rights. Since its creation, the group has expanded with the participation of professors, researchers and professionals from different universities and research centers, as well as civil society organizations.

IN 2009, Antigona was recognized as a Consolidated Research Group (ref. 2009-SGR-00570) by the Agency for the Management of University and Research (AGAUR) of the Generalitat of Catalonia. The analysis of the development of women’s rights in a gender perspective is the overall objective of Antigona’s Group.

The Antigona’s members are professors and researchers from several Spanish universities coming from the fields of Philosophy of Law, Criminal Law, Sociology of Law and Human Rights.

It carries out research on women and law, women’s rights, violence against women, security and gender, criminal justice system and gender, public policies and gender, feminist jurisprudence, bioethics and sexual and reproductive rights, sociology of law and study of masculinities. It has participated as coordinator and/or partner in a number of competitive research projects at European, national and local level. For example, it has experience in three projects directly related to MATRIFOR’s project: The IRIS project « Intervention sur les violences envers les femmes: recherche et mise en service des guichets specializes » (ref. LS/2008/DAP3/AG/124T, Daphne programme); The « Anuario de los derechos humanos de las mujeres (« Yearly compilation of women’s human rights) financed by the catalan Government, Department of Home Affairs (ref. 2009/R.Ex. 002) ; The GAP project »gender based violence, stalking and fear of crime » (ref. JLS/2007/ISEC/415).

It coordinates and/or participates in teaching courses at B.A., Master degree and PhD level on these matters. It coordinates the Postgraduate course on gender and Equality and several of its members participates as professors in the Interuniversity Official Master on Women, Gender and Citizenship (

The disseminate activities of the research are also part of the ongoing work of Antigona group, activities in which there are several people involved: professors, fellows students and external collaborators. For example, Antigona from 2003 to 2012, coordinated an annual conference on women and rights, and the UAB Law Faculty.
